Report on the event Smart Prep

The Commerce Department, Hans Raj College organized a SMART PREP session for the students on 6 November, 2012 to help them overcome their fear of examination. The session was highly satisfying for the students looking for answers to their queries and helped view their exams from a completely new perspective.

The participants of the Smart Prep class were guided by the skills, intellect and experience of the college top scorers. The speakers for the session were Aman Jain, Vasu Singhal, Saumya Aggrawal, Jagriti Kalra, Ishita Bansal and Ekansh. All of them from their hard work have left a mark in the academic records of college by attaining the top ranks in college examinations. Who better than them could have quenched the students thirst for answers to their queries.
The participants came with their queries about what books to consult for various subjects, how to go about preparing for the papers, how can one balance CA with B.com(h), what are the best places to take tuition for CA, when is the ideal time to start with preparation for CAT and many more.

All the questions were effectively answered by the speakers and the help provide the students with a clear and a fresh outlook to their study routine.

The students hailed the effort of the Commerce Department for organizing such an event because it gave them a chance to interact with their seniors and batch mates who excelled in academics and squeeze the best from them for their betterment.
The students attending the event returned enlightened and satisfied with a clearer view of the path they should tread on.

The feedback  received for the session were:
1."Very smart prep. Very satisfied with the event. All my fears are now out of my mind." - Deepanshu Khurana, II year.
2. "The session was very interesting. It has boosted my confidence level. I can now manage B.Com(H) and C.A easily. Please conduct this session regularly."- Srishti Saini, II year.

The event ended on a positive note fulfilling the aim for which it was organized, i.e., to help students come out of their dilemma and fear over examinations and hopefully this is what was achieved.

Report on FDI seminar by Shaurya

Yet another learning experience, yet another interaction.
This time the commerce society came up with a seminar on the hot and raged topic, the one that's creating a buzz everywhere : " FDI in Retail ".
Seminars are not meant to derive out a reason or conclusion to any one topic, rather they help us talk and share views. This seminar too, helped to enrich the young.

Date : Oct 29, 2012
Time: 12.30 pm
Venue: Seminar Hall

The guest speaker for the day was Mrs. Archana Capoor, Former CMD, Tourism Finance Corporation of India Ltd., who was welcomed with honour by the HOD, Mr. N.K. Jain. She has over 23 years of experience in the field of banking, forex and treasury management. She did her MBA in Finance and Market Research.

Like a true professional, she threw light initially on the concept of Foreign Direct Investment, how it came into being, why it is essential in the present scenario and it's power of creating headlines every other day. Her powerpoint presentation summed up all her points of discussion with the utmost efficiency and enhanced her explanations. Interestingly, it was from right to left, reasoned for people to pay attention to their ears more than their eyes!
Mrs. Capoor also highlighted contemporary examples like the success of Dr. Lal Path Labs, Telecommunication Companies, McDonalds', the IGI Airport, Walmart, the automobile sector, Big Bazaar, Reliance Fresh, Easy Day, Nirulas, IKEA and many more..

Her idea of the FDI was about cross border dealings comprising of stocks and private funds. The evolution of FDI was divided into 3 phases which included the phase prior to 1980, the one between 1980 and 2000, and the one post 2000. In our speaker's opinion, the post independence period had a controlled economy, limited resources and limited scope. On the other hand, the modern business era is much more conducive to growth and globalization. Talking of the 80's tourism in China, she made us realise what a long way the world has come. Also, the contribution of Dr. Manmohan Singh brought about a huge change in the Indian Economy. The example of Coca Cola and Rs. 25 per SMS lightened up students' faces!
Coalition policies provided a stable government and direction to boost the major policies including FDI. The disinvestment policy also shifted ownership criteria towards the private sector. Comparisons among the 3 phases were also discussed. The recent policy for Multibrand Retail Trade, effective from Sept 20, 2012 was highlighted as well.
Every coin has 2 sides. The negatives were also correctly pointed out. India being a developing country, it's infrastructure is a major concern in the invent of the world famous retail stores. Mrs. Capoor made sure that each present took active interest in the topic. She also patiently mentioned the FDI process and ammendments to the policy. She elaborated why India is a favourable site for foreign investors. Adding her sense of humour, examination of relevant points made the curious brains give thought to her words.

A question answer round was carried out, where our guest cleared out doubts of the young would-be-graduates. The students showed enthusiasm and participated with the zeal to learn.

We thank her, whole heartedly for sharing her opinion, and imparting her wisdom with the Department of Commerce, Hans Raj College.
At the end of the day, it is the knowledge and networking that keeps a person well aware of his surroundings. Thanks to seminars, they help us meet professionals in the industry and communicate directly about the never ending generation of thoughts.
