Every
famous business venture has a story attached to it, which the customers
can relate to. Walking on the streets, Jim Poss was annoyed by the
noise pollution created by waste collection truck which was blocking
traffic, polluting air, wasting gallons of diesel by doing round trips
every then and now. Poss was caught up with the inefficiencies of
operations including idling of pick up trucks, there has to a better
approach to operate, he believed. He discovered the waste collecting
trucks consume 1 BN gallon of diesel in a year, and are among the most
expensive vehicles to operate. The frustration caused Tension within him
which in turn led to emergence of an idea. Thus, came the idea of BigBelly Solar Compactor.
Having sufficient background on solar power, he came up with an idea to eliminate the waste at the site of collection itself
This was done by setting up of BigBelly
Solar Compactor. The Compactor uses solar power to reduce waste,
wireless monitoring of bin site fullness ensured that pickups reached on
time and thereby ensuring the innovative dustbin to be 4- 5 times the
capacity of a traditional dustbin! As a result, this delivers up to an
80% reduction in the costs related to trash collection and vehicle
activity, including fuel costs, vehicle maintenance and carbon
emissions. Although the Compactor is not cheap, the price being around
$3000-$3900, BigBelly Solar claims the cost can be recovered in 3 years
by good enough savings that are ensured.
With 10000 units set up world wide, it has
happened to be a successful venture. The firm has been getting positive
responses from the clients!! Solar Powered on site trash deduction
reduces required pick ups. Wireless Monitoring of the fullness and
collection status of trash bins allows for better planning, route
optimization and asset management. This allows collection providers to
deliver comparable service levels at a much lower cost.
With several generations of product
development now behind it, the solar compactor has been engineered to be
extremely energy efficient and reliable, even in harsh environmental
climates and latitudes.
Clientele include Municipal Corp of Philadelphia, Universities, Austrian City.
The system consists of:
1. Solar-powered, off-grid trash compaction.
2.
Wireless connectivity and asset monitoring/management : Each BigBelly
solar compactor is monitored by the CLEAN (Collection Logistics
Efficiency And Notification). Real-time communication of "bin fullness"
information supports operations that don’t pick up too early or too
late. Optimized collection permits waste collection service providers to
maintain high service levels at significantly reducing costs.
3. Companion recycling stations
