Report on Stock Guru by Pranay Saraf

Keeping in mind the primary objective of the all-round development of the commerce students of Hansraj college, the commerce society took another initiative to train and mould some of the future Warren Buffetts. "Stock guru", a highly awaited event which witnessed the participation of around 40 teams, was a resounding success.  "Anxiousness, excitement, Jealousy, Hunger to win, thrill and agitation" are words which hardly do justice to describe the real atmosphere of the competition.

Beginning with a simplified model of the stock market, the first phase of the competition was an attempt to filter the brightest from the bright. Basically, it was a competition which asked the participants to make the best possible use of their analytical skills. The goal was simple-profit maximization, the means weren't! Each round had a set of news headlines, on the basis of which participants made their decisions and the predetermined price model was the key mechanism. Even if it was relatively easy to pick if the market was bullish or bearish, it was a really tough task to pick the company with the maximum return. Each and every team were seen debating among themselves; putting all of their logic to best possible use.

Only twelve teams advanced to the final leg of the competition. The organizers took the competition to a whole new level by introducing the short selling concept and determining the price using the demand and supply concept. Participants were literally seen biting their nails off as adrenaline gushed through their veins. "Kingfisher, Airtel, Infosys, ITC, HUL, Maruti Suzuki, or some other company", the participants were caught in a complex dilemma. It was a fiercely fought competition but, at the end of the day, only 1 team could walk out with broad smiles on their face. What made the event an overwhelming success was the meticulous planning by the organizing body and the highly enthusiastic participation. It definitely wouldn't be over-optimistic to say that hansarians would win several accolades in the various fests and competitions to come, as far as mock stock is concerned.

The team which walked out with their fists punching the air, huge hugs and broad smiles on their face comprised of :-
1. Karan Setia
2. Pranay Saraf

The team which ended just a mile behind comprised of:-
1. Binny Pal Singh Bakshi
2. Mahvish hamid.

A meeting with the VC

On September 1, 2012 a very insightful and interactive seminar was held between the Vice Chancellor,Delhi University and the students of the University . The seminar which took place in the University Stadium was held mainly to inform the students about the new policies and facilities provided to them as well as to gather knowledge regarding the problems dealt by the students and offer solutions to them. A handful of students from almost every college of the DU were present to represent their respective college. The seminar started with an introduction of the people presiding the event followed by an informatory speech by the VC in which he familiarised the students with the recent developments in the university policies which have been introduced to benefit the students. He started by announcing an exchange program for post grads with Australia. The VC further said that Free education, metro and DTC ride will be provided to Special case students. A University festival by the name of Antardhwani will be held each year where every college will have one stall. The best girls' soccer team will be sent to the best college in New Zealand to play with their team. One laptop and one LCD will be installed in every class of every college. The last date for submission of the examination form has been postponed to September 30,2012.  Students can take up innovation projects out of which a selected few will be funded by the University. Deans will be appointed for undergraduate courses as well. The result of the semester examinations will be announced within three weeks from the date of the last exam. The speech was followed by a question and answer round where students cited various problems dealt by them and lack of certain facilities such as inadequate hostel facilities and lack of braille libraries. To this, the VC responded that construction of hostels at various places in the South Campus is already taking place and braille libraries and audio books will soon be made available for visually impaired students. Through this seminar the students became aware of the efforts which the University authorities are making to provide their students with a better quality education and an all round development at DU. With this, the seminar ended on a very promising note.

THE BRAINY ECRITURE

The Commerce Society is in the voyage to lookout for the “Best Student Writer” in the chambers of B.Com(h).
It is an online event in which you can display the writer inside you. Write an article on any Commerce related topic and win the title.

Having snags in choosing a topic???
You can always have an evergreen topic:
- Brand wars
- FDI in retail
- Corruption and business
- India and China

Or write an abstract:
- How much does a bad boss cost a business?
- Flipkart or Walmart- what will you choose?
- Are Indians richer than Americans?

Or how about picking up a latest issue:
- how far our GDP might fall?
- Can Kingfisher rise again?
- Is Manesar incident an evidence of disconnect?
Remember, you must stay drunk on writing so that the reality cannot destroy you:)
